The Chief Information Officer (CIO) of Optum Financial has overall business enablement, information system and technology responsibilities for Optum Financial, Optum Bank, and other acquired and related technology teams. The CIO is responsible for demonstrating thought leadership in architecting and delivering large scale, complex, modern, and innovative technology solutions. This leader should also be a true leader of people, modeling humility, curiosity, and transparency, and building a team of like-minded individuals.

This position provides vision and leadership for developing, implementing, uplifting and maintaining software and infrastructure to enable business and customer value. The CIO is part of the executive leadership team and is responsible for improving delivery efficiency, cost effectiveness, service quality, and supporting business development with a collaborative, customer-focused leadership style that works effectively across business units.

They will be expected to:

  • Leverage technology expertise and understanding of market trends to formulate, develop and execute a multi-year strategic technology plan that enables the scaling and growth of our business and delivers differentiating value to our customers
  • Drive decision-making on system capabilities and technology potential
  • Ensure optimum utilization of current systems and capabilities and leverage technology to maximize efficiencies and profitability
  • Oversee daily operations of technology in providing ongoing service to stakeholders, as well as maintaining the security of all systems, both customer facing and internal, including fraud reduction, maintaining up to date software and OS patching, and ensuring rugged code delivery
  • Oversee and work closely with the CIO of Optum Bank to ensure satisfactory audit and compliance reports

The CIO for Optum Financial is also responsible for successfully integrating newly-acquired entities to achieve business goals and effectively merge, utilize or decommission software and platforms as needed.

Core responsibilities will include:

  • In partnership with the Optum Financial leaders, develop, communicate, and implement long-range strategic plans in support of an integrated, innovative technology suite
  • Collaborate on business strategy as a member of the technology and business executive leadership teams
  • Guide information systems and technology decisions, including, but not limited to hardware, software, infrastructure, staffing, services and support
  • Build and maintain trusting relationships with Optum Financial business leaders
  • Understand business strategies and operating objectives and ensure business/technology strategies/plans are in alignment
  • Set the technology vision and strategy by understanding business strategy and translating that strategy into a technology agenda that drives business goals
  • Utilize information assets and manage divergent technologies effectively to produce innovative and cost-effective enterprise-wide technology solutions
  • Incorporate best practices to ensure smooth operations and search for opportunities to improve capabilities as well as reduce costs
  • Leverage a nimble, flexible, responsive and customer-oriented technology model to execute the end-to-end process of delivering information services, support and technologies to both internal and external customers
  • Partner and guide cross-functional teams to ensure successful delivery of solutions from concept through launch
  • Design and implement a disciplined software engineering process using a DevOps model
  • Provide an end-to-end consumer experience that exceeds expectations
  • Lead the technology integration of acquired entities and technology assets
  • Operate as a servant leader for a global team accountable for end-to-end technology services
  • Ensure alignment of the technology service delivery chain including applications and infrastructure
  • Understand and manage the financial budget for technology services in alignment with business strategy

  • Experience leading global teams of 500+ people with a focus on collaboration, diversity & development
  • Direct-to-consumer (B2C) technology solutions expertise
  • Track record of delivering scalable and highly-available systems in the Financial Services industry
  • Broad technology experience, including complex systems integration expertise
  • Demonstrated success leveraging innovative technology to meet business objectives
  • Experience leveraging shared technology services in a global organization
