Engineering Manager, DevOps

The Provider Insights group within Roche Information Solutions (RIS) is responsible for a portfolio of software solutions that support healthcare providers and patients across a range of applications and disease areas.

The Position:

The Engineering Manager, DevOps is a critical leadership role in the Provider Insights engineering organization. This role leads and mentors a team of DevOps engineers critical to the development and operations of a portfolio of digital health software solutions.

This is a people management role that requires the ability to hire and grow top engineering talent. The role also requires strong strategic thinking, with the ability to think of out of the box solutions and to make build/buy/partner decisions.

Strong communication inside and outside of engineering is critical, working closely with customers and the product and operations teams to translate customer requirements into code.

A healthcare background with experience in integrating healthcare IT systems and working with doctors is nice to have; interest and enthusiasm to work in healthcare are critical.

Your Responsibilities

Software Delivery: this position requires hands-on DevOps responsibilities in addition to people and team leadership responsibilities. You will be an active member of a scrum team, contributing to development and delivery of stories. Additionally, you may often take on the tech lead role and scrum master role for a team of engineers who report to you or are allocated to your scrum team.

People Management: as a people manager, you’ll be responsible for hiring, growing and motivating DevOps engineers on your team, ensuring you recruit and retain top talent

Best Practices: lead the team to deliver on their commitments, ensuring the design and planning is accurate and work is delivered on time with quality; drive best practices in Agile and Software Delivery

Leadership and Vision: individual and team leadership, with the ability to scale up and inspire multiple teams; long term vision, proactively planning for future organizational growth and driving a technology roadmap

Your Qualifications:

BS degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineer or equivalent in a related field with 6+ years of software industry experience (4+ years with an MS degree in a related field).

1+ years of people management experience for a team of engineers

Experience with cloud platforms, preferably AWS.

Familiarity with setting up and maintaining SQL and NoSQL datastores

Expert scripting skills with languages such as python

Extensive experience setting up and optimizing CI/CD pipelines (Gitlab, Github Action)

Proficient understanding of source code management tools (e.g. Git)

Hands-on experience as an SRE or DevOps engineer for complex software solutions (mobile, web, and/or cloud solutions)

Hands-on software development of Infrastructure as Code (Terraform) and of configuration management (Ansible, Chef)

Experience in contemporary orchestration platforms (Kubernetes, Nomad)

Experience in operating as a member and leader of an agile scrum team, ideally in a scaled agile framework

Quick learner with the ability to understand complex workflows and develop and validate innovative solutions to solve difficult problems

Strong communication, with the ability to explain complex technical problems to non-technical audiences and the ability to translate customer requirements to technical designs

Strong interpersonal skills, with proven ability to navigate complex corporate environments and influence stakeholders and partners

Global experience, influencing or (preferably) managing remote teams to deliver software releases

Experience in healthcare is not required, but familiarity with healthcare systems and data and workflows is a plus
