Our Product Management team provides critical enabling technology solutions for Optum California’s mission to redefine healthcare management through improved quality and efficient delivery of care. As a Director of Product Management, you will lead a fast-paced, knowledgeable and energetic Value Stream-based Product Management team to continually adapt and expand an innovative software product portfolio that offers a broad range of management services to healthcare providers.

We are looking for an imaginative leader with a passion for healthcare and great software. A leader with record of driving the evolution of complex internally-developed software portfolios aligned with strategic business goals and operational needs and an entrepreneurial mindset. This leader must be curious, thoughtful and organized with a relentless focus on the needs of users and business partners to help product managers solve strategic problems. Qualified candidates will have experience interacting closely with executive team members, customers, product owners, business systems analysts, software architects, and other key stakeholders to understand customer needs, drive business growth, identify potential products, quantify product benefits, gather strategic requirements, develop multi-year roadmaps, coordinate production timelines, and define time-integrated plans for product introduction.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Interact with executive management to facilitate the definition of epic-level solutions aligned with overall strategy, mission, and high-level enterprise goals, including financial and operational objectives
  • Set clear product vision and strategy that delivers unique value based on customer demands needed to achieve product success utilizing customer research, competitive intelligence and industry trends
  • Develop first rate product roadmap by collaborating and including input of stakeholders and cross-functional teams
  • Engage business partners regularly to solicit feedback and identify opportunities to create new products and/or improve portfolio value
  • Measure progress against your strategy and plan; find patterns and dig into the “why” behind the metrics by synthesizing multiple pieces of data, including user analytics, customer feedback, market research, and stakeholder opinions
  • Manage communications to ensure stakeholders are informed of investment planning, changes, and execution progress across the portfolio
  • Lead, manage and maintain an Agile product management team comprised of product manager/owners and business systems analyst (BSAs) roles by recruiting, selecting, orienting, training employees and appraising job results
  • Guide product managers and owners in continuously assessing and prioritizing the impact of planned software features so that the highest value work is delivered at the soonest possible time
  • Engage in quarterly planning and prioritization efforts at the portfolio and solution level
  • Keep team focused on the Why – why we are building this product and outcome it will produce
  • Be familiar with and understand methodologies, processes, tools and technology that support the product for determining feature estimates, defining requirements and release plans
  • Build trust with your team and lead with conviction, compassion and diplomacy

Required Qualifications:
  • 4-year degree in a related field or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years of experience leading product management teams with demonstrated success delivering widely adopted platforms and/or ecosystems
  • Familiarity with a range of business areas related to healthcare delivery (e.g., medical management, transaction services, network operations, RAF and coding, marketing, accounting, finance)
  • Experience working in an Agile software development environment with a track record of delivering multiple successful products to production
  • Proficiency with work item and defect tracking management systems (e.g., Aha!, Team Foundation Server, Azure DevOps, Jira, Rally, or similar ALM’s etc.)
  • Proficiency with Visio, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Diplomatic with solid negotiation and conflict resolution skills
  • Relatable public speaker with effective presentation skills
  • Capable of recognizing, articulating, and quantifying benefits of (and drawbacks to) proposed products and changes
  • Engaged learner with the ability to quickly absorb and understand complex information
  • Solid attention to detail and track record of producing quality work
  • Team player with a great work ethic
  • Effective networker who values collaboration and brings people together to find optimal solutions
  • Comfortable pushing management and delivery teams to decisions, and willing to push back for information and answers
  • Ability to quickly identify and communicate product delivery risks

Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado residents is $79,700 to $142,600. The salary range for Connecticut/Nevada residents is $87,900 to $156,900. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
