The role
The Senior DevOps Engineer is a key contributor on a high-performing team of engineers provisioning and supporting cloud infrastructure and CI/CD pipelines for the US business unit. The role requires the ability to mentor a growing team of cloud engineers while furnishing a deep technical knowledge related to operating a portfolio of applications within a public cloud. You are motivated by a desire to enact effective engineering practices, make the right technical decisions, and build strong relationships. The Senior DevOps Engineer will be a key proponent and practitioner of infrastructure as code, CI/CD processes, Agile approaches to development work, and building cohesive relationships across teams within the organization.

Hiscox USA was established in 2006 to focus on the needs underserved and specialty commercial clients via both the regional broker and direct distribution channels and is today the fastest-growing business unit within the Hiscox Group. Today, Hiscox USA has a talent force of about 400 employees mostly operating out of 6 major cities - New York, Atlanta, Dallas, Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Hiscox USA offers a broad portfolio of commercial products, including technology, cyber & data risk, multiple professional liability lines, media, entertainment, management liability, crime, kidnap & ransom, commercial property and terrorism.
About the IT Team
The Hiscox USA IT team is currently 80 people strong and growing. We are primarily located in Atlanta, Georgia. Globally, Hiscox IT has a federated model with centralization where it counts. Each of our Business Units have a Head of IT who is responsible for both the operational support and change delivery within the Business Unit. The Heads of IT report to a Group CIO to ensure consistency where it matters. All Business Units are supported by centralized teams including CTO, IT management Operations, Enterprise Applications and IT Services.
Hiscox USA Software Delivery team is made up of over 40 professionals that develop and test applications for the US business.

What you’ll be doing:
- Work with project teams to understand current cloud infrastructure state and guide changes as necessary
- Serve as knowledgeable mentor for other team members regularly
- Design, build, and operate infrastructure components within the US application portfolio
- Implement infrastructure state management to guarantee consistent compute state
- Be a consistent proponent of agile and rigorous engineering practices
- Communicate effectively and build relationships with multiple teams across global organization
to maintain Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) modules used across the global organization
Person Specification:
Essential Skills:
- Deep understanding of IaC and CI/CD workflows
- Demonstrable experience with diverse assortment of frameworks, languages, and products. Specific examples include:
- Bamboo, Jenkins, or similar CI/CD software
- Docker and Kubernetes
- Bitbucket and Git
- OS administration (Windows and Linux)
- Comprehensive grasp of software development practices including modularity and composition
- Experience provisioning and operating production-grade solutions in a public cloud
- Considered perspective in operating an enterprise effectively in a public cloud including security, governance, networking, and application development concerns
- Familiarity with relational database administration and data management
- Familiarity with Agile working processes (planning, demos, retrospectives) and work definition (mapping, story definitions, work breakdown)
- Comfortable in a mentorship role within a small technical team in the context of a large organization
- 7+ years of appropriate IT industry experience focused on software development and operations
- Experience with Azure
- Experience with Terraform and Puppet
- Experience in financial, insurance, or other regulated industries
- Experience with business-critical applications and large scale customer facing websites
- Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science or related area
