The Associated Press seeks a motivated Senior Project Manager to join its Technology team in NYC. The Senior Project Manager will be part of a dynamic, multi-disciplinary team that develops and supports AP’s elections platform and operations from vote tabulation to race calls to estimating expected vote.

The successful candidate will play a key role in evolving AP’s traditional elections business into a data product, delivering complex use cases for demanding customers in a growing number of industries. The project demands deep attention to detail, interest in/knowledge of/hunger to learn about the mechanics of U.S. elections administration, an ability to broker conversations and decisions about relative priority of various feature sets, and a willingness to help support the system and its users on critical election nights during the 2023 and 2024 calendars and beyond.

Applicants are expected to have a working knowledge of the software development lifecycle, and tools used to create products roadmaps and project plans. Project managers are expected to participate in project planning; developing business requirements; managing scope, budget and schedules; collaborating with software development, QA and support teams and managing all stakeholder communications.

This role calls for strong communication and organizational skills and a willingness to learn internal workflows and the needs of AP’s customers. This full-time position will be based in AP’s New York City headquarters.

Please note: AP is currently a hybrid office-remote workplace. This role would require the successful candidate to work from AP’s New York office at least 2 days per week, subject to change.

Responsibilities:
  • Manage multiple initiatives simultaneously across a variety of teams
  • Work collaboratively with stakeholders across the organization to analyze and translate business needs into technology requirements, and report out on project status
  • Organize and report project status to all stakeholders
  • Create and manage work tracks
  • Adapt to changing conditions and modify project execution plan as appropriate while managing multiple projects concurrently
  • Proactively highlight and resolve risks and issues and clearly communicate those risks to stakeholders
  • Identify blocks and facilitate the removal of those blocks
Basic Qualifications
  • 5+ years project management experience leading co-located project teams
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related discipline
  • Have a strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills
  • Be able to thrive in a fast-paced environment, concurrently managing multiple initiatives, and manage priorities
  • Analytical, deadline-driven, and process-oriented personality
  • Entrepreneurial drive, with the ability to understand tradeoffs and how project decisions are made
  • Excel in leading effective meetings (keeping teams on track), plan, document decisions, and follow up
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills – especially in written and oral presentations – and the ability to facilitate parties working collaboratively and efficiently
  • Foundational understanding for software and infrastructure engineering technologies (Cloud, DevOps, Databases etc.)
  • Willingness to learn new technologies and use data to inform business decisions
Preferred Qualifications
  • PMP (Project Management Professional) / CSM (Certified Scrum Master) certification
  • Knowledge of and/or interest in U.S. elections
Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English language is required. Authorization to work in the US for any employer is mandatory.

The anticipated salary range for this position is $125,000 - $150,000, contingent on experience and other job-related factors. Employees are eligible to participate, according to the terms of the official plan documents, in a 401(k) plan, employer-sponsored health insurance plan, and are eligible for paid time off and holidays in accordance with AP policy.
