The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) is a leading global Standards Developing organization (SDO) with a long tradition of developing and publishing high quality technical standards and specifications, as well as journal articles and white papers for the Media and Entertainment (M&E) industry. In addition, it is the organizer of large-scale events showcasing the work in SMPTE and other M&E organizations. The work in SMPTE is made possible through a large, highly engaged membership of volunteers who are driving the innovation of new, interoperable technologies for media applications. In its role as a technology leader SMPTE wants to transform its operational environment into a state-of-art software defined infrastructure with modern service and distribution interfaces.
The Software Developer will support SMPTE's Director of Standards Development in that effort by supporting the document, event and communications processes required to run the SMPTE Standards Community and the larger SMPTE organization. A major part of the Software Developer role will be taking responsibility for the automated processes associated with SMPTE's Standards Knowledge Network to improve the experience of consumers and creators of SMPTE technical content. All positions with SMPTE are designed to meet regulatory compliance set forth by the Fair Labor Standards Act, National Labor Relations Act, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, Americans with Disabilities Act and Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead the automation efforts in the Standards Knowledge Network including development, management, and multi-platform publishing of SMPTE Standards.
  • Lead the effort to establish & document new procedures, formats, archiving, and data analysis to support the automation efforts.
  • Define, document, and implement interfaces to ensure an interoperable and frictionless ecosystem with internal and external systems.
  • Establish quality control processes and best practices to achieve the quality objectives set by the Director of Standards development, such as deliverables, reliability, and system uptime.
  • Establish, maintain, and evolve concepts in continuous integration and deployment (CI/CD) pipelines for existing and new services from SMPTE.
  • Be the administrator for all platforms that contribute to the Standards Knowledge Network.
  • Manage, track and document changes to code with source control tools.
  • Communicate processes and best practices to users through tutorials and documentation.
  • Collaborate with management, users, and staff to implement and deploy new services.
  • Manage relationships and development efforts with external parties.
  • Work with our members to provide customer support.
  • Development work may include other SMPTE departments
  • Provide desktop support services for all staff, including but not limited to ensuring all staff are running the latest iterations of software, replace hardware as necessary, support office infrastructure including maintaining the IT closet.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related technical field
  • 3+ years of software development experience in JavaScript / Python / related language
  • DevOps experience in a technical lead role
  • Experience in cloud platform administration (AWS, AZURE/Microsoft 365)
  • Experience with the Microsoft Power Platform and its tools (Power Automate, Power Apps, Power BI etc.)
  • Proficient in HTML, XML and JSON • Proficient in git and version control platforms (GitLab, GitHub)
  • Understanding of web/internet-based protocols (HTTP(S), SSL/TLS, DNS, etc.)
  • Strong knowledge of IT Security (encryption, firewalls, secure systems design, vulnerability management, secure software design, credential management, proxies, etc.)
  • Deep understanding of IT fundamentals, including Linux and Microsoft operating systems, networking, security, cloud (AWS), and database technologies
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written; able to explain complex technical topics to both internal and external customers with ease
  • Ability to work in a distributed small multi-talented team in an agile, scrum fashion with standup meetings
  • Passionate about IT, technology, and following the latest industry trends
  • Display a customer support mentality
  • Knowledge of Media & Entertainment workflows a plus
