The Job

We are the team that architects, designs and operates the backend datastores for the HBO Max streaming platform that enables real-time targeted customer experiences and dynamic business decisions. We work with the most modern data platform technologies, deployed on a global scale in a cloud environment, and designed to support hundreds of millions of customers in dozens of countries.

We collaborate with Software Engineers and Site Reliability Engineers to build reliability, performance and security into our streaming products. We champion infrastructure as code and strongly believe that automation is the key to delivering reliable systems. Forget what you know of traditional DBAs, we are “Database Reliability Engineers” and we allow HBO Max to move faster, to ship big database changes without downtime or outages, and to run in an efficient, lights-out manner that just works.

You will be part of a small team, you will get your hands dirty with a lot of modern technology, and you will be a key part of making HBO Max an incredible customer experience!

The Daily
  • Be an integral part of a team that designs, defines and executes end-to-end support and performance tuning of SQL and NoSQL databases for our direct-to-consumer platform
  • Work with other engineers on your team to define the data architecture for our DTC streaming platform, HBO Max; including identifying gaps in the existing system and designing alternatives that are scalable, robust and easy to maintain
  • Partner with engineering stakeholders to help them deliver their releases on time and at a high level of quality
  • Design, build and maintain end-to-end data platforms in an Infrastructure-As-Code environment
  • Achieve operational simplicity while scaling internationally through automated deployment and configuration management
  • Plan capacity, and optimize system for cost while maintaining ability to handle peak load in an elastically-scaled fashion
  • Improve system reliability, quality and performance based on quantitative metrics


The Essentials
  • 2+ years of experience in software engineering, preferably with a reliability engineering or deployment automation focus
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team of talented individuals, grow collaboration in a distributed environment and have fun
  • Expertise with core Computer Science fundamentals, programming, algorithms, and data structures
  • Experience delivering solutions in a public cloud environment
  • Familiarity with modern SQL or NoSQL database technologies
  • Experience writing code, or development of scripts
  • Experience operating in a professional software development environment, utilizing version control, artifact repositories, deployment automation tools, CI/CD technologies
  • Comfort with operating production environments: use of monitoring and alerting tools, designing for security, planning for continuous availability

  • Knowledge of database architecture and administration
  • Ops viz tooling, such as Statsd, Prometheus, Grafana, Elasticsearch/Logstash/Kibana (ELK), Splunk
  • Specific knowledge of one or more of: DynamoDB, AWS Postgres RDS, Elasticache Redis, Cassandra, pgBouncer, AWS DMS
  • Knowledge and experience with Mongo DB, AWS Aurora, timeseries, graph, and analytical database platforms
  • Database tuning and optimization skills
  • Jenkins, GitHub, Ansible Playbook and Terraform
