Job Description:
Neustar Systems Engineers are the backbone of our DevOps practice. They have experience in software development, database technologies (SQL and NoSQL), network administration and Linux system administration. Some engineers provide IaaS and PaaS services to our internal software development teams and others operate and maintain customer-facing services.
All of our engineers support multiple services and technologies, focusing on automating and improving support functions through automation, instrumentation and operational best practices.
Requirements
All applicants must have experience across software development, network and Linux systems administration. Applicants must also be able to develop software to integrate services. As an example, an applicant should be able to develop a connector that would allow Splunk to escalate alerts to Slack and/or Pagerduty.
Neustar Systems Engineers have end-to-end ownership of services and must also be able to support full stack troubleshooting. An applicant must be able to login to a host they have never operated before, investigate the processes and configurations on that host, identify issues with the processes and resolve those issues.
Engineers will participate in a shared 24x7 on-call rotation supporting multiple services. Each engineer will be personally responsible for 1-2 services with on-call responsibilities for 3-7 services. Issues that the Tier 1 organization are unable to resolve will be escalated to the Systems Engineers for triage and resolution.
These skills will require applicants to have mastered the following technologies:
Software development – Automation and API integration in bash, Java, PHP or Python,
Linux system administration – process and socket management, network configuration, host monitoring and capacity planning
Network administration – IPv4 and IPv6 sub netting, routing and troubleshooting, BGP management
Database – SQL and NoSQL, Oracle, MySQL, MongoDB, Hadoop - loading data, backing up data and querying data
Instrumentation / Visualization - Monitoring and alerting – Log Stash, ELK, Splunk, Sensu, Kentik, Thousand Eyes, capacity planning
Cloud services – AWS, Azure, auto-scaling, CI/CD
While not strictly enforced, we have found that the most successful candidates have 3-5 years of experience in system administration or software engineering. These candidates have a graduate or post-graduate degree in a STEM field and have experience with SDLC, ITIL and Agile methodologies. Neustar is looking for candidates who are self motivated and capable of working in a fast paced organization.

Experience and Qualifications
Four year degree in IT, Computer Science or related field OR equivalent work experience

Experience developing with Java or a dynamic programming languages such as Python
